Tympanums were believed to derived from the greek and roman architectrual tradtions. Tympanums are often decorated with sculptures but does not necessarily have to be. The architect was trying to potray the ancient christian construction style with tympanums having sculptures that decribe the story of jesus, but in this case there are no sculptures involved.
