Pilaster was believed to be derived from greek architectural tradition. 

Pilaster does not seem to be supporting the roof but just looks like a fancy extension in this case. 

I assume the architect was trying to give the corver some shape, so designed a pilaster rather than a dull conjuction of the perpendicular walls.
