Colonnades date back to few hunderds of centuries when orders were began to be used to support the roof. 

The colonnade gives a classic look to the church and gives it a traditional romanesqe church look which also emphasized on length with long colonnades.

The architect tried to use the colonnades to support eh ambulatory and the colonnade serves the intended purpose perfectly.
