Ambulatory

Ambulatory - continuation of the aisled spaces on either side of the nave around the apse  or chancel to form a continuous processional way.

Is the covered passage around a cloister.

Ambulatories were found from the beginnning of greek architecture with large orders to support the ceiling.

Ambulatories provide lare walking aisles for visitors to walk arounf the apse or around the structure.

The architect intended to give space for visitors to wither walk around the apse or along the structure giving place for circumambulation. Yes, ambulatories are used for the same purpose as intended by the architect.
